It's the Little Things

As I continue through my half marathon journey, I’ve rediscovered the joy of the simple, little healthy things along the way.  Taking the time to remember, reflect and appreciate what I have the ability to do by eating well and exercising is re-inspiration.

The simple act of walking has been important to me throughout training.  Walking is good active recovery.  It’s also a very enjoyable activity to take in the sights and sounds, as well as talk with company.  It’s a good stress reliever and it’s a cheap, easy thing to do.  I’ve been trying to work walking and hiking in more to my routine and it’s a good thing for me when I do.

Getting restful sleep is important to me because I read a lot of research about the benefit to training and to just being able to successfully get through the day. With recent travels and events, I don’t always get the sleep I want, so I appreciate when I can get to bed a few minutes early or when I wake up feeling refreshed from a solid night sleep.  It’s worth it to me to make sure it’s configured into my routine.

In order to keep up on my training routine, I have to try and eat so that I’m fueling as best as I can.  I have my fair share of stress eating struggles so I’ve had my ups and downs during training.  It’s easy to think a little indulging is okay because I’m exercising often.  At times I’ve let it become an excuse to over indulge.  But again, it’s made me appreciate the value of food and what it does for the body, even just for everyday function.

My ability to make it to the start line is humbling.  It’s a blessing that I can cross a finish line.  While I suppose the races feel “big” in nature, I’m constantly thinking about the little things when I’m running.  It’s what helps keep me grounded.

What little or big things do you appreciate?  How does health and wellness affect those feelings?
